Independence, IA (Saturday, June 2, 2012) - Saturday night took me to the Independence Motor Speedway in Independence, IA for my first ever visit to the track. After looking around the facility it looks like the grandstands, lights and scoreboard are fairly new, along with some dirt added to the racing surface over the past winter. Every Saturday night fans can come out to watch the IMCA Late Models, IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, IMCA SportMods and IMCA Hobby Stocks compete, with an average car count of 100 in those five classes.
The first feature to take to the track was the 18 lap IMCA Stock Cars, with Russell Damme Jr. and Roger Ciesielski leading the field to the drop of the green, with Ciesielski grabbing the lead on lap 1. But after the completion of the lap the first caution of the event would come out to slow the action down. Mike Padden would spin in turn 1, which caused Norman Chesmore and John Emerson to get tied together. On the restart Ciesielski moved back out front, but had Jason Hocken, who started 7th, following him in his tracks. Ciesielski's run up front ended on the completion of lap 2, as he spun in turn 3 and collected Tim Helle, who was running 3rd, to bring out the caution. On the restart Dave Stricker, who started 9th, grabbed the lead over Sean Johnson, who started 11th. Johnson would slip under Stricker to grab the top spot away on lap 5, but Stricker would come back to take the lead back on lap 6. Stricker then got sideways in turn 1 on lap 7, which slowed down Johnson enough to allow Hocken to get by both to take over the lead. The next caution of the event would come out on lap 14, as debris in turn 2 slowed the field. Hocken jumped back out front on the restart, with Jarod Weepie, who started 12th, following him in second. The action up front was slowed on lap 16, as Ciesielski, who went to the back after his spin on lap 2 and had worked his way back to 5th, was battling for 4th when he spun in turn 3 after contact from Jason Niedert to bring out the yellow. On the restart Padden got into Stricker on the back stretch while battling for 6th and spun him, which collected Paul Fauser to bring the yellow back out. The time limit was up after that caution, which meant the race was checkered. Hocken picked up the win, Weepie was 2nd, Johnson was 3rd, Chesmore recovered from the lap 1 crash to finish in 4th, with Phil Holtz coming from 8th to round out the top 5.
Jason Hocken picked up the IMCA Stock Car feature on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at the Independence Motor Speedway in Independence, IA.
Up next was the 15 lap IMCA SportMod feature, with Brian Hilbert and Al Sweerin starting on the front row, when Jim Aschenbrenner who was suppose to start on the pole scratched from the event. But it was 6th place starter Matt McCahen who jumped out front on lap 1 over Hilbert and Brandon Smith. McCahen started to pull away from the battle for second when the first caution came out in turn 2. Sweerin spun and collected Hilbert to bring out the yellow. On the restart McCahen moved back out front with Jim Buhlman, who started 8th, on his back bumper. The final caution of the event would come out on lap 9, as Rick Paulson, who was running 4th, spun in turn 1 and collected Shane Ebaugh and Kip Siems. McCahen again jumped back out front on the restart, with Buhlman and Smith battling for 2nd. McCahen then held off Buhlman over the final laps to claim the win. Buhlman settled for 2nd, Smith was 3rd, Dave Schulze was 4th, with Ebaugh, who started 16th, recovering from the lap 9 crash to finish in 5th.

Hunter then held the top spot until lap 6, when Bryan Klein slipped under him to take over the lead. Klein and Hunter then pulled away from the field over the next 14 laps, when the first caution came out on lap 20. Chad Lerch spun in turn 4 to bring out the yellow. On the restart Klein moved back out front, with Luke Pestka, who started 9th, following in 2nd. The action up front was slowed on lap 21, when Hunter, who was running 4th, spun in turn 4 to bring out the yellow and ending his run up front. On the restart Scott Welsh spun in turn 2 and collected Leon Thomsen to bring the yellow back out. The next restart saw Klein jump back out front, with Pestka close behind in 2nd. But it was forth place starter Justin Lichty who grabbed the lead on lap 1 over Luloff and Vince Buchholz. Lichty would only lead lap 1, as Luloff slipped past him to take over the top spot on lap 2. The first caution of the event would come out on lap 4, as Lowell Potter spun in turn 3 to slow the action up front. On the restart Luloff moved back out front, with Benji Irvine, who started 9th, close behind. Luloff would hold off Irvine over the next 8 laps, when the final caution of the event came out on lap 12. Bruce Fraser spun his machine in turn 2 to bring out the yellow. Luloff grabbed the lead on the restart and then pulled away over the final 3 laps to claim the win. Manson would take advantage of his front row starting spot to grab the lead on lap 1 over Betzer and Jeff Streeter. Manson then held the lead until the completion of lap 1, as the caution came out for debris in turn 1. Under the caution Manson slowed to a stop in turn 3 and was pushed to the pits to end his night. On the restart Shane Burbridge, who was running 8th, spun in turn 2 and collected Todd Conrad, Jamie Johnson and Terry Johnson. Jerry Luloff , who started 7th, jumped out front on the restart over Streeter and Ronn Lauritzen, who started 10th. Luloff then held on to the top spot until lap 17, when Lauritzen slipped under him to grab the lead. On the completion of lap 17 the caution would come out, as Terry Johnson stopped in turn 1.
