Burgtorf Claims His 100th IMCA Late Model Feature Win on Friday Night at Lee County Speedway

Donnellson, IA (July 31, 2009) - What another beautiful night for racing on Friday, as the Lee County Speedway fans saw racing in all six classes. Taking home feature wins on the night were Mark Burgtorf (IMCA Late Models), Josh Foster (IMCA Modifieds), Jeff Mueller (IMCA Stock Cars), Jason Cook (IMCA Sport Mods), Doug Fenton (Hobby Stocks) and Gabe Harrison (Wild Things).

The first feature of the night was the 12 lap IMCA Stock Cars, with Corey Strothman and Dennis Harwood leading the field to the green flag. But it was fourth place starter Aaron Brocksick grabbing the lead on lap 1, followed closely by Strothman. The one and only yellow of the event came out after the completion of lap 1, for a drive shaft from the car of Rick Hutcherson. On the restart Brocksick jumped back into the lead, with Strothman challenging him for the lead. While Brocksick worked to hold off Strothman, Jeff Mueller, who started 9th, was working his way to the front. Mueller would get by Strothman for second on lap 10 and now was working on Brocksick for the lead. Brocksick tried everything to hold off Mueller, but Mueller would get under him on lap 12 to take over the top spot. Mueller then held on for the final 3 laps to claim his third win in a row at the speedway. Brocksick held on for second, Jason Cook came from 8th to finish in third, Abe Huls was fourth, with Strothman holding on for fifth.

Up next was the 25 lap IMCA Late Model feature, with Jay Chenoweth and Gary Russell making up the front row. Colby Springsteen, who started 3rd, jumped out into the lead on lap 1 and then held it until lap 7, when Russell slipped under him to take over the top spot. After the completion of the lap, Chenoweth would spin in turn two to bring out the one and only caution of the event. On the restart, Russell once again moved out into the lead with Tony Fraise following in second. Fraise, who picked up his first win in a Late Model last week at the track, would slip by Russell on lap 12 to take the lead, with Mark Burgtorf, who started 10th, following him into second. Fraise, who was working the bottom of the track, and Burgtorf, who was up top, ran the next 6 laps side-by-side. Burgtorf would grab the advantage on lap 19 and then went on to lead the final 6 laps to pick up his 100th IMCA Late Model win of his career. Fraise held on for second, Tommy Elston came from 9th to finish in third, Tom Goble was fourth, with Jason Frankel rounding out the top five.

Lonnie Heap and Rob Kirchner, who was suppose to start outside front row but scratched giving it to Brandon Savage led the field to the green in the 20 lap IMCA Modified feature. Heap would take advantage of his starting spot to jump into the lead on lap 1, with the yellow coming out after the completion of the lap for a spin by John Mickelson in turn two. On the restart, Heap once again moved out into the lead, with Brad Ford close behind in second. The yellow would come back out on lap 4, as Tyler Cale, Michael Long and Bill Roberts collided in turn two. Once again Heap jumped out front on the restart, but now had Josh Foster, who started 11th, following him in second. Foster would jump to the outside of Heap on lap 7 to take over the top spot and was pulling away when the yellow came out on lap 15 for Beau Taylor and Matt Gavin in turn one. Foster grabbed the lead on the restart only to be slowed for the final time on lap 16, as Mike Weikert Jr. spun in turn four. On the restart, Foster once again moved out into the lead and then went on to lead the final four laps to pick up the win. Heap held on for second, Rich Smith came from 9th to finish in third, Ford held on for fourth, with Dusty Kraklio coming from 12th to round out the top five.

The Steve Kirchner Memorial IMCA Sport Mod 15 lap feature was up next, with Derrick Higdon and Jacob Smith on the front row. Smith would jump out into the lead on lap 1, with Thad Gaylord challenging in second. Smith then held the top spot until lap 6 when he spun in turn 2, giving the lead over to Gaylord. Gaylord would only lead one lap, as Jason Cook, who started 6th, slipped under him on lap 7 to take over the lead. The first of two yellows in the event came out after the completion of lap 7 for a spin in one by Higdon and Lonnie McCarty. Cook moved out front on the restart, only to be slowed on the next lap for a spin by Derek Coleman in turn one. Once again Cook would grab the lead on the restart, but now had Rodger Dresden, who started 7th, close behind in second. Cook would hold off several challenges from Dresden over the final 7 laps to claim the win. Gaylord held on for third, Rick Barlow Jr. was fourth, with Rod Staats coming from 15th to round out the top five.

Bobby Files and Doug Fenton led the field to the green flag in the 15 lap Hobby Stock feature, but two yellows before a lap could be completed slowed the event down. Once the race got started Fenton would jump out into the lead, with Brandon Symmonds close behind in second. Symmonds would slip by Fenton for the lead on lap 12 only to have the caution come out before the lap could be completed, giving the lead back to Fenton. The time limit was up on this caution, so it set up a green-white-checkered finish. On the restart Fenton moved out into the lead only to have the caution come out for a spin by Files in turn two. The yellow and checkered flag would wave for Fenton, giving him his second win in two nights of racing at the speedway. Symmonds held on for second, Jim Lynch came from 12th to finish in third, Bob Lynch started 17th and finished fourth, with Jeremy Pundt coming home in fifth.

The final feature of the night was the 12 lap Wild Things, with Randy Meyer and Mike Horning Jr. on the front row. On the start Jerry Ostby would roll in turn two to bring out the red, he walked away ok. Then Chuck Fullenkamp would slow to a stop on the next restart to bring the yellow out. Once the race got a lap in, Gabe Harrison would jump out into the lead and was slowed again on lap 3 for debris on the back stretch. On the restart Chris Loring Jr., who started 11th, slipped by Harrison to take the top spot on lap 4. The yellow would come out on the completion of lap 4 and 5 for Rich Mohrfeld who spun in turn two, he would be sent to the pits for two solo spins. Loring Jr. moved out into the lead on the restart only to be slowed on lap 6 for the final time, as Jayson Barnes and Bryan Rodefer got together coming off of four. Once again Loring Jr. grabbed the lead on the restart and then held on for the final 6 laps to pick up the win. But Loring jr. would be claimed after the race by Rodefer and refused to sell giving the win to Harrison, his second in a row. Dakota Fenton came from 12th to finish in second, Fodefer was third, William Michel was fourth, with Jeremy Billings coming from 18th to round out the top five.

Notes from LCS: Not only did Mark Burgtorf pick up his 100th IMCA Late Model win, he also got the hard charger award from AEM, a product certificates worth $100......Wyatt Lantz started the Modified feature in 22nd and had worked his way to fifth when he pulled into the pits on lap 15 with mechanical troubles....On the same lap Michael Long had worked his way back to 11th after an early crash, but went to the pits with troubles....Jim Lynch, who had raced the Harris Clash at Knoxville, Iowa earlier in the week and didn't have time to change his car back, made the pull over from Bloomfield to race at the Lee County Speedway. He would have troubles in the heat and had to start 23rd in the feature, but would pass 16 cars to finish seventh....The top three teams in each of the three heat races would compete in a pit crew challenge on the front stretch. The teams had to start at the wall and race to the car, where the driver had to strap in and put all the safety equipment on. While the crew had to change the left rear tire and then move it to the right front. Once all that was done, then the driver raced to the finish on the back stretch. Long's team would pick up the win over Bill Roberts and Josh Foster......Adam Shelman made his first appearence of the season at the speedway and started the Sport Mod feature in 10th. He then passed four cars to take home a nice 6th place run....Jacob Smith who spun early while leading would recover to finish in seventh....Phillip Cossel was running in fourth and suddenly slowed on lap 10 to finish in 9th. Cossel's finish would give Dresden the point lead by 3 points over Cossel and 4 points over Cook......Jim Lynch not only started 12th in the Hobby Stock feature, but had to come from the back of the field twice after trying to avoid wrecks. He would charge up to a nice third place finish. Lynch would also trim Derek St. Clair's point lead to 1 point, as St. Clair had troubles and finished 15th....Dane Fenton started the feature 19th and passed 13 cars to take home a 6th place finish....Dan Wenig came from the back after an early crash to finish in seventh....Dugan Thye made his first trip to Lee County and started the feature 20th, he would stay out of troubles to pick up a 10th place finish......Dakota Fenton was claimed by William Michel after the finish of the Wild Thing feature. Fenton decided to swap cars, which helped him keep his point lead.
