Sherbon Takes Steve Kirchner Memorial Trophy Back to Cedar Falls

Donnellson, IA (Friday, July 30, 2010) - Friday night was the Steve Kirchner Memorial Race for the IMCA SportMods at the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson. At the end of the night it was Josh Sherbon from Cedar Falls taking home the trophy and money. Also claiming wins on the night were Jim Lynch (IMCA Modifieds), Jason Cook (IMCA Stock Cars), Jake Wenig (Hobby Stocks) and Jerry Ostby (Wild Things).

Up first was the 12 lap Wild Things feature, with C.J. Loring and Mike Horning Jr. making up the front row. But a caution for a non start would slow the field down for a complete restart. On the restart Loring would grab the lead on lap 1, with the caution coming out after the completion of the lap. Debris in turn one would be the cause for the caution to reappear. Loring again jumped out into the lead on the restart, with Jerry Ostby coming from 6th to following him in second. Another caution on lap 5 for Tony Shankle who stopped in turn four, would slow the battle for the lead. On the restart Horning Jr. would jump the start to bring the yellow light back on. He would be moved back 2 spots from his third place running spot for the restart. Loring once again moved out front on the restart and then tried to hold off Ostby for the lead. Ostby would slip by Loring on lap 9 to take over the top spot and then pulled away over the final 3 laps to claim his second win in a row and third overall at the track. Loring held on for 2nd, Nick Wilkerson came from 9th to finish in 3rd, Gabe Harrison started 8th and finished 4th, with William Michel coming from 10th to round out the top 5.

The 15 lap Hobby Stock feature took to the track next, with Roger Krieger and Larry McConnell leading them to the drop of the green flag. Krieger took advantage of his front row start to grab the lead on lap 1 over McConnell. The first caution of the event would come out on lap 3, as TJ Henderson, Victor Hastings, Jeremy Pundt and Dane Fenton collided in turn 2. On the restart Krieger jumped back out into the lead, with McConnell working to hold off Jake Wenig, who started 12th, for second. Wenig got by McConnell for second on lap 6 and then on the next lap he would slip by Krieger for the lead. The yellow light would come back on, on lap 9 for Hastings who slowed with a right rear flat. On the restart Wenig grabbed the lead and now had to work to hold off Matt Tucker, who started 9th. Wenig and Tucker had a great battle going for the lead, when the final caution of the event came out on lap 11. Jim Lynch, who was running 8th, would come to a stop on the backstretch with troubles. Once again Wenig moved out into the lead on the restart, with Tucker close behind in second. Wenig would hold off a last lap challenge from Tucker to pick up his fifth win of the season at the speedway. Dan Wenig came from 8th to finish in 3rd, McConnell held on for a season best 4th, with Tanner Thomann passing 8 cars from his 13th place starting spot to come home in 5th.

Dylan Book and Josh Sherbon drew the front row for the 20 lap Steve Kirchner Memorial for the IMCA SportMods, with Book grabbing the lead on the drop of the green. The first caution of the race would come out after the completion of lap 1, as Rick Barlow Jr. spun and collected Tim Zeman and Jim Kuhlmeier. On the restart Book jumped back out into the lead, with Sherbon following him close behind in second. The battle up front was slowed on lap 3, as Jacob Smith spun in turn 2 and AJ Johnson came to a stop in turn 4. Book again moved out into the lead on the restart, with Sherbon still locked on to his back bumper. Just as the battle up front was heating up another caution would come out, as Rodger Dresden, who was running 7th, slowed to a stop with troubles on lap 6. Sherbon would time the restart perfectly, as he slipped under Book coming off of turn four to grab the top spot away. Just as Book tried to get Sherbon back, the caution would appear again. This time Dakota Fenton would come to a stop on the backstretch on the completion of lap 7. On the restart Sherbon held off Book to grab the lead and then worked to hold him back when another caution came out on lap 12. Dresden and Tim Zeman would collide in turn 2 to end both there nights. Sherbon again moved out into the lead on the restart, with Book close behind in second. The two drivers continued there battle up front, when the final caution of the event came out on lap 18 to set up a green-white-checkered finish. Rod Staats, who was running 9th, would spin in turn 2 to bring out the final caution. Book timed the restart perfectly, as he returned Sherbon's charge on the lap 7 restart, to grab the top spot away. But Sherbon didn't give up, as he and Book ran the final lap side-by-side. Sherbon would edge out Book at the line to pick up the win. Mike Shelton came home in 3rd, Derek Coleman came from 9th to finish in 4th, with Mitch Higdon rounding out the top 5.

Dustan Fenton and Kirk Hopkins made up the front row for the 20 lap IMCA Modified feature, but it was third place starter Brandon Savage getting the lead on lap 1. Rob Kirchner would slip under Savage on lap 2 to take over the top spot and then worked to hold him off. The first caution of the event would come out on lap 4, as Hopkins spun in turn 4. On the restart Kirchner moved back out into the lead, with Savage close behind in second. Again Kirchner was working to hold off Savage, when another caution came out on the completion of lap 6. This time Daniel Hilsabeck, Fenton, Wyatt Lantz and Andy Krieger collided in turn 4. Kirchner once again grabbed the lead on the restart, with Savage battling him in second. While Kirchner and Savage battled for the lead, Brandon Rothzen, who started 10th, Rich Smith, who started 9th, and Jim Lynch, who started 11th, were working there way to the front. Savage would slip under Kirchner on lap 10 to take over the lead, with Rothzen following him into second. Rothzen's great run to the front ended on lap 12, as he spun in turn 4 to bring out the caution. On the restart Savage moved out front, with Smith and Lynch battling close behind for second. Lynch would take to the top of the race track on lap 15 to over take Savage for the top spot. Lynch then started to pull away from the battle for second, when the final caution of the event came out on lap 18. Hopkins would spin in turn 2 to set up a green-white-checkered finish. On the restart Lynch moved out front, with Smith challenging him for the top spot. Smith would try Lynch on the bottom over the final 2 laps, but Lynch was able to hold him off to pick up his second win of the season at the track. Bill Roberts passed 15 cars from his 18th place starting spot to finish in 3rd, Dean McGee came home in 4th, with Kirchner holding on for fifth.

The final feature of the night was the 15 lap IMCA Stock Cars, with Rich Vogt and Jim Redman leading the field to the drop of the green. Vogt would take advantage of his front row starting spot to grab the lead on lap 1. The first yellow of the race would come out after the completion of lap 1, as Corey Strothman, who was running 5th, Jeff Mueller and Damon Aplara collided in turn 3. On the restart Redman, who was running 2nd, and Derek St. Clair, who was running 3rd, would collide going down the front stretch to bring the caution back out. The yellow light would come back on on the next restart, as Mueller spun off of turn 2 after clipping a tire in turn 1 to end his night. On the restart Nathan Wood would slip past Vogt to grab the top spot away and then worked to hold off Jason Cook, who started 7th. Cook tried several times to get under Wood over the next 3 laps, when Wood slipped enough on lap 6 to allow Cook to get by for the lead. Cook, Wood and Matt Greiner, who started 8th, had a great battle going for the lead, when the final caution came out on lap 10 for Vogt who stopped on the front stretch with front end troubles. On the restart Cook moved out front and then held on over the final 5 laps to pick up his 4th win of the season at the speedway.
